RCMP NATIONAL MEMORIAL CEMETERY AT BEECHWOOD
THE 146th RCMP ANNIVERSARY
23 MAY 2019
WE REMEMBERED
The North West Mounted Police, predecessor to the RCMP, and Beechwood Cemetery located in Ottawa were both created in 1873. For the past 146 years, deceased RCMP members and their families have relied on Beechwood for their final resting place in Ottawa. In 2002, the RCMP National Memorial Cemetery (RNMC) was established at Beechwood Cemetery. Last year, the Ottawa Division started an annual vigil and a wreath-laying ceremony on the anniversary of the RCMP, May 23rd, leading up to the 150th anniversary of the RCMP in 2023. Each year, additional activities are added to the event. ………….
A guided walking tour of Beechwood Cemetery by RCMP Veterans was provided to guests. Each grave was identified by a Canadian flag and the RCMP Ensign. The following graves were visited and a short overview of their career was recounted.
“Despite the uncertainty of the weather, it was a rewarding experience to take a guided tour of the old Beechwood Cemetery and to listen to anecdotes and stories related to the members buried there and who were part of the Northwest Mounted Police and/or who fought in the Great Wars. We were also honored to be accompanied throughout the visit by two Riders of the Musical Ride and their beautiful horses.”
